In 2004, LASBHC became the recipient of a generous $1.275 million dollar, five-year
grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to develop and advocate for public policy
changes that sustain and strengthen existing school-based sites and expand the model
into new communities. To work towards that goal, LASBHC identified five sites across
the state to serve as centers of grass roots advocacy development and to create
advocacy teams that promote the SBHC model at home, with state policy makers and
at the federal level. These schools represent all levels of education and a mix of rural,
urban and suburban communities. The schools are:

• Booker T. Washington High in New Orleans
• Capitol High SBHC also serving Park Elementary in Baton Rouge
• Jena Junior/Senior High in Jena
• McCall Jr./Sr. High SBHC also serving Wright Elementary in Tallulah
• Northside High in Lafayette

The advocacy teams at these schools include students, parents, teachers,
administrators and people from the community who recognize the value of a school-
based health center in their neighborhoods. And while these five schools are the
nucleus of our advocacy teams, other sites across the state have joined in this effort. If
you are interested in participating in an existing advocacy team or starting one in
your community, please contact us (email).
